Easter Secular

easter bunnyThe word "Easter" is derived from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of the Dawn, hence the occurrence of the holiday during the spring, or dawn of the year. For Easter, many different seeds and plants are put into their pots and their growth and flourishing beauty is to symbolize the coming of the new spring and the renewed vegetation.

However, the main theme of the Secular Easter is the Easter Bunny. Though it is just a fun thing to do in most homes, I'm afraid that some young humans actually believe that there is an Easter Bunny that goes around and leaves plastic (or real) eggs in your yard for you to look for and find. White House Easter Egg RollFor the majority though, it is just a fun tradition to compete with your neighbors to find randomly colored and placed eggs in a yard or (in some places) a park. Presents are common, even something just as simple as a hug or a kiss, or can be a complete, (hollow or solid) chocolate bunny, with plastic egg full of chocolate kisses and a $5 bill.

Easter is a time of year to meet with ones friends and family and have dinner or lunch together. They might go to a local park and have a picnic out upon the grass or perhaps on a group of tables and benches, placed among a grove of trees. However, it would be just as easy to eat one's aunt's pretzel-jello at home with the air conditioning on, while half the people go play football (whether outside or on a game system) or watch it on the new big screen TV that they got for Christmas.

So, Easter, for some, is a family-oriented holiday, and not one that has serious religious content.

It's a way to see the new baby, meet the long-forgotten cousins, watch football, and.... well, play football.

To the left is a video of an Easter Egg hunt held last Easter at a local Oak Park location.

You can see it is great fun!
